Special Education and Section 504

Supporting Access, Learning, and Student Growth
Navigator Pointe Academy works with families to identify and support eligible students with disabilities. Special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA, and accommodations under Section 504 are determined through individualized evaluation and team-based decision-making.
Special Education and the IEP Process
Special education provides specially designed instruction and related services to eligible students whose disabilities affect their education. When a student is suspected of having a disability, the school gathers information and completes an evaluation with parent participation and consent. A team, including the parent or guardian, reviews the information and determines eligibility. If the student is eligible, the team develops an Individualized Education Program, or IEP, that identifies the student’s needs, goals, services, accommodations, and how progress will be measured. The IEP is reviewed regularly with the family.
Child Find
Navigator Pointe Academy has a responsibility to identify and evaluate enrolled students who may have a disability and may need special education services. A concern may involve learning, communication, hearing, vision, physical development, behavior, or another area that significantly affects a student’s education. A student may be referred even when the student is advancing from grade to grade.
Contact Front Office
If you believe a current NPA student may need an evaluation, contact the Front Office. The office will connect you with the appropriate member of the student-support or special education team.

Section 504
Section 504 is a federal civil rights law that protects qualified students with disabilities from discrimination and helps ensure equal access to school programs and activities. A student may qualify when a physical or mental impairment substantially limits one or more major life activities. The school reviews information from multiple sources and uses a knowledgeable team to determine eligibility and any needed accommodations or related aids and services. A medical diagnosis alone does not automatically determine eligibility, and a medical diagnosis is not always required before the school considers an evaluation.
1. A parent, guardian, teacher, or school team raises a concern.
2. The school reviews the concern and determines whether an evaluation is needed.
3. A knowledgeable team reviews relevant information and determines eligibility.
4. If the student qualifies, the team documents the accommodations or services needed for equal access.
5. The plan and the student’s needs are reviewed periodically.
